On the Makarska Riviera there are beaches everyone knows, and then there are those you only discover when you stray a little from the main route. One of them is Velika Duba beach in Živogošće, a small cove that in recent years has become known for photographs of turquoise water and the dramatic rocks that surround it.

Velika Duba sits between the villages of Živogošće and Drvenik, tucked beneath the Adriatic coastal road. A short trail through a pine forest leads down to it, and many passing travellers drive right by without knowing what lies just a few dozen metres below. When the trail opens up toward the sea, visitors are met with a cove of white pebbles and water that shifts through shades of pale turquoise to deep blue.

It is precisely this unusual sight that led some to start calling it the “Croatian Dubai” online. The comparison is more symbolic than literal, but aerial photographs make it easy to see why this small cove has attracted so much attention.

What Makes Velika Duba Beach Special

Unlike many popular beaches on the Makarska Riviera, Velika Duba has very little in the way of facilities, and that is precisely one of the reasons visitors love it. No large beach bars, no rows of sun loungers, no loud music. Instead, visitors are greeted by crystal clear water, white pebbles and a natural cove surrounded by pine trees and steep rocky cliffs.

That kind of landscape creates the impression that you are somewhere far more remote and hidden than you actually are. Although the beach sits right below the main coastal road, the moment you descend to the sea the noise of traffic disappears and all that remains is the sound of waves and seagulls.

How to Get to Velika Duba Beach

Getting to this beach is relatively straightforward, but does require a short walk. A path through the pine forest leads down from the main road and takes just a few minutes, and a car park nearby charges a fee during the tourist season.

Since the beach itself has very little infrastructure, it is worth bringing water, sun protection and everything else you need for a day by the sea in advance. That natural simplicity is precisely the reason Velika Duba still feels like a hidden corner of the Makarska Riviera.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Velika Duba

Velika Duba has grown increasingly popular in recent years, largely thanks to photographs circulating on social media. During July and August it can get quite busy, although the crowds are usually smaller than at the larger beaches in the main tourist centres.

The most beautiful time to visit is early in the morning or late afternoon when the light is softer, the sea calmer and the atmosphere considerably more relaxed. Many visitors consider June and September the ideal months, as the sea is still warm but the beach is far quieter than at the height of the season.

One of the Most Beautiful Hidden Beaches on the Makarska Riviera

Velika Duba may not be the most famous beach on the Makarska Riviera, but many who visit say it has something special. The combination of turquoise water, white pebbles and a natural cove surrounded by pine trees creates a landscape that is hard to forget.

That is why this small cove in Živogošće is increasingly mentioned among the most beautiful hidden beaches in Croatia.
